On the 26th May 2011 a new law, which is an amendment to the 2003 Privacy and Ecommunications Directive, comes into force which will require UK businesses and other organisations to obtain consent from visitors to their websites in order to store on and retrieve usage information from users’ computers. Although the law will be passed the Information Commission is yet to determine how consent must be given and the government department responsible (the Department of Culture, Media & Sport) has announced that although the EU directive becomes law on May 26, in the UK it would not be implemented until June.
